Caterina Barbieri – Vertical

Caterina Barbieri, former Sex with Giallone, is a classically trained italian composer and performer with a degree in classical guitar and electro-acoustic music received by the conservatory of Bologna.

Mostly interested in modular synthesis, three-dimensional spatialisation and psychoacoustic aural sculpture, her music arises from a meditative approach to primary waveforms, microtonality and the polyrhythm of harmonics, on the boundary between drone, minimalism and techno in multichannel systems. Her work has been commissioned and performed in festivals and venues of experimental music.

Vertical is her first album (Important Records/Cassauna, entirely based on Buchla Synthesizer sounds and vocals. Buy it here.

From original liner notes: Vertical originates from a meditation on primary waveforms and polyrhythm of harmonics, stretching the boundaries between drone, minimalism and techno in multichannel systems. The minimalistic focus arises from the polyrithmic and stratigraphic potential of voltage-controlled sequencers and modular synthesis. All the tracks were played, recorded and produced in Stockholm, at EMS (Electroacoustic Music Studios) and KMH (Royal College of Music).
